The most extraordinary event in English history

The Mother of God and her Divine Son appear to Saint Simon Stock, in Cambridge, 760 years ago, aiding souls throughout the world to achieve and keep holiness, to reach final perseverance.

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Dear Parents & Guardians,

Thank you for visiting my blog and spending time with your children to click on links and explore what we have been up to in class from day to day!

The students are working well in every subject, and I especially see a great interest in Science and Math! Everyone encourages each other and lends a helping hand. I must say this class works very well together and I think we may be seeing the future David Suzuki and Albert Einstein!

As you know we are almost through our Science and technology unit - Life Systems! The students are putting the finishing touches on their reports and I cannot wait for you to see them!  I am so proud of them :)
Next week is our big trip to TooGood Pond in Unionville! we will be discovering organisms, habitats and much more, live!
Thank you to all parents who have volunteered to come with us that day!

Math has been challenging, fun, and full of new adventures.  The students are always looking for new ways, new technology to use to solve their math problems!  We are working through the unit of Measurement, and exploring surface area! Students have really been excelling and enjoying using the Nets to create pyramids! You can print your own and build them together at home to solve the surface area.

Next week, an update on Language, Art and Social Studies!

Thank you for all of your support and encouragement.
***Please remember you may access the Ontario curriculum documents on the Parent's Corner section of this blog to look up any strand and expectation that your child is discovering!

Sincerely,
Ms. Seguin

Surface Area - Measurement!

Let's Review!

Rectangular prism:  SA = 2lw+2lh+2wh
Triangular prism:  SA = wh + lw + lh + ls

Don't worry if you do not have the hang of solving surface area for rectangular and triangular prisms! I am happy you are working hard and attempting to solve the questions.  Don't give up, I know you will get it!

Remember Grade 6's that we investigated how to find the surface area of these shapes by using a variety of tools. I love using the pattern blocks, but try some new technology and experiment with nets, and any dynamic geometry software you can find. If you find anything neat, bring it to class or tell us about it!

Some videos that may be useful to further your understanding!

Click on MATH to access a great site with basic tips incase you need that extra help with your surface area homework tonight!

If you have any feedback, feel free to comment!
See you tomorrow!

Our Lady of Fatima

Dear Lady of Fatima,
We come on bended knee,
To beg Your intercession,
For peace and unity.

This Friday, May 13th is our annual school procession in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, OUR LADY OF FATIMA.  On May 13th, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children--Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco--in a series of apparitions at Fatima, Portugal from May to October 1917.

More than 70,000 people saw the sun twirl in the sky, throw off colors and descend to earth. The event was reported in newspapers around the world!

Remember to bring any flowers, real or fake, from home for Friday as we will be presenting many bouquet's to Our Lady!

Here is a prayer you can pray, along with the ROSARY, before you go to bed at night or with your family:
Dearest Mother, Queen of the Holy Rosary, who came to Fatima to reveal to all mankind the Divine plan for true Christian peace, of prayer, penance, and consecration, grant an abundance of grace, strength, and guidance to the members of Thy Fatima Crusade, here present and throughout the world. Inspire us to great zeal, oh great Mediatrix of All Graces, that we may be effective instruments in spreading devotion to Thy Rosary; that we may be faithful in wearing Thy scapular; that we may inspire our brothers in Christ to a life of sacrifice, penance, and modesty, and finally, that we may help to bring about that wonderful day when all men, through consecration to Thy Immaculate Heart, shall be one in Christ. Amen.

Classification - Science and Technology Reports...

Another Monday!

Students, thank you for getting through Monday, I know you were all tired from your busy weekends!

I found an online quiz (more of a fun game) about the classification of organisms. I did pretty well, I am sure you will too. Try it out here!

As we continue with our Understanding of Life Systems unit, I wanted to provide you with some help as you continue writing and editing your Science and Technology Classification Organism Reports! I really like what I have seen and read so far.

Some guiding questions to help you compare the characteristics of organisms within the plant or animal kingdoms:

  • What are the criteria you will use to compare organisms?
  • Why are these good criteria to use to compare the organisms?
  • How might the criteria change if you picked two different organisms?
  • Why is it important to be able to compare organisms in some organized way?

I found a neat video on animal habitats that may assist you with your reports and the Life Systems! Check it out!

If you need any more help or guidance, always feel free to ask me at anytime!
See you tomorrow!

Life Systems - Too Good to be True?

Grade 6'ers!

As a teacher who is constantly reading and gaining knowledge so that I can bring new and exciting material to you in the classroom everyday, I have discovered a snip-it from the Ontario curriculum documents regarding our Life Systems unit! I think you and your parents would be interested to know exactly what it is that we are learning and why!  Here is the snip-it:

The study of living things in Grade 6 focuses on the use of classification systems as ways
of learning about the great diversity of species and as ways of organizing the study of
species. Particular attention is given to the classification of organisms in the animal
kingdom. Classifying animals not only will enable students to learn about many different
types of animals, from mammals to microscopic organisms, but will help them to observe
and describe similarities and differences among species more precisely. To acquire firsthand
experience in studying the diversity of living things, students will examine and
classify organisms in a specific habitat – a pond, for example.
- The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8: Science and Technology, 1998, page 21

Hmm.... a pond.  This brings me right to the BIG NEWS I had for you in class.  Our upcoming trip will be to TooGood Pond in Unionville! We are going to investigate the organisms that we find, in their specific habitats, and classify them according to the CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM we are working on in class now!
TooGood Pond is a 33-hectare park that has many points of interest including a partially naturalized pond and a marsh.

I know you will love it, as this pond is full of character and life!  We will also have time for some shopping and eating on the famous Main Street.

See you tomorrow!

Area of ... Triangles!

Hello class!

Measurement, measurement, measurement! It can seem as though there are so many different formulas for every POLYGON, but it is important that we not mix them up! You did a wonderful job in class today as we discovered the formula for the area of a triangle.  A= bxh / 2

Let us remember that the triangle is the simplest polygon, having three sides and three ANGLES
The sum of the three angles of a triangle is equal to 180 degrees.

Always think of how we can relate the triangle to everyday life, and that will make solving its area a little more interesting! Just as the rectangle and the circle are very popular in the real world, so is the triangle! You'll find triangles at work bracing a structure or bridge, racking billiard balls, or holding up a shelf!

Keep up the good work and remember to complete the worksheet from your Nelson activity books as we will be taking up the answers tomorrow!
